It was around six pm on a Monday and though we were promised a dry night, it had not stopped raining! James and me were seated there talking about the recent tennis results, waiting for the next fuel drain for the day to come in. In due time we got the phone call from a lovely woman on a business trip who had arrived at the Sainsburys filling garage in Wooler and put the wrong fuel in a diesel expensive Audi A4 hire car in error. The poor lady was rather irritated it seemed, crying "I simply can't believe that I have destroyed the vehicle! I am so used to filling my petrol vehicle that I totally didn't remember that I was using a diesel!" I advised her to calm down and not to worry, and that things like this do happen. She was able to relocate the car into a safe spot and, because it was just a few minutes from where we were, we could reach the customer swiftly. The bad fuel was removed so she could go home to the hotel she was lodging in. Even though we got fairly drenched, it was all worth the effort to watch her drive off calm and a lot less worried. Yet another misfuel correction in Northumberland well done in my books!

The 3 things you SHOULD know about a Misfuel!

AdBlue In your Fuel

All over Northumberland we have seen an increasing number of instances of AdBlue contamination when someone has poured AdBlue inside their diesel fuel tank. This is partly as a consequence of drivers being unsure of the right way to work with it (important: it's in reality not a fuel additive), and partly due to the fact that the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are often right near to one another on the vehicle.

Well, what exactly is the situation with putting AdBlue in the diesel car?

Because AdBlue is mainly deionised water, it is actually almost the same as pouring water in to your tank. Diesel and water do not ever blend at all and attempting to run a diesel car on water cannot work. Apart from this, the urea is particularly corrosive to your fuel system pipes and seals and is more prone to crystalising, clogging injectors and fuel filters. If you find you put AdBlue into your fuel tank get it out at once. And most certainly don't start the engine - not even to relocate it into a parking bay. If you have started the vehicle you would in all probability need to have the whole fuel system flushed and fuel filters changed out.

Contact us in the event that you are a victim of AdBlue contamination. We will help. We are Specialists in dealing with contaminated fuel and can attend to different types of AdBlue liquid contamination.

    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
